Youngsters 'take over' policing

YOUNG people across Chiltern were allowed to 'takeover' policing as part of a national day to let them go behind the scenes.
Sixth formers from The Misbourne School, Chalfonts Community College, Chesham Park Community College and Amersham School were given an insight into how Thames Valley Police operates as part of 11 Million Takeover Day on Friday.

Organised by the Children's Commissioner for England, Sir Al Aynsley-Green, Takeover Day encourages organisations across the country to open their doors to children and young people so that they can see for themselves the processes behind the decisions which affect their daily lives.
Joined by the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, Allan Westray, they took a tour of Amersham Police Station to experience custody cells, learn about career opportunities and to give feedback on the best ways of communicating with their age group.
They were also able to join respond to incidents with officers and see first hand the impact of crime.
Chief Inspector Ian Hunter, Chiltern area commander, took part in the interactive day with the teenagers. He said: "Today is about how to improve confidence in policing. Youth groups are really hard to reach as not one represents everyone so to have access to them and to hear from them how we can improve our policing services is really interesting.
Chalfonts Community College student George Patterson, 17, who is hoping to enter the police force, went to the scene of a domestic incident as part of the 'takeover'. He said: "I didn't expect to be able to follow a police officer but they were kind enough to let us go along. I saw the situation and thought this might be me in a few years time. It was quite scary but insightful at the same time. It's much better to have something hands on than to read from a book."
The police participation in the event is part of the force's youth strategy to consult and understand the needs of young people.
