Swine flu threat and rain does not dampen spirits
CHILDREN turned out in their numbers to brave the threat of swine flu and heavy rain showers to attend a Christian holiday week.
More than 1,000 youngsters of all ages turned out to enjoy craft-making, music, drama and sport at the Lighthouse event at the Buryfield, Great Missenden.
Lighthouse, a multi-denominational event attended by youngsters from churches in the area, this year had the theme of 'journeys' and involved the children dressing up as explorers to learn about teachings in the Bible.
This year extra precautions, such as not re-using drinks cups, were taken to combat the spread of the H1N1 virus currently sweeping the country.
Eleven-year-old Katy Roberts, was among the youngsters taking part. Katy, of Weston Turville, said: "I have been attending Lighthouse at Great Missenden since I was five years old. I look forward to it each year, it is the highlight of the summer break for me, and I find it a very spiritually uplifting and upbeat weeklong event.
"Lots of people work very hard to make Lighthouse the great success that it is, and all the children are very grateful to them and have a great deal of fun during the week."
The event, in its 22nd year, was organised by more than 600 volunteers. For next year's event a treasurer, site manager and other helpers are needed to ensure it goes ahead.
