Young chefs go head to head
Youngsters swapped their school uniforms for aprons for the Rotary Young Chef competition.
Amersham, Chesham and Missenden Rotary Clubs staged the first heat of the national Young Chef competition at Chesham Park Community College last Saturday.
The competition is open to young people of school age who are interested in cooking.
The chefs had to come up with a healthy two course recipe, write it out, budget it and make it in two hours.
The six competitors were, Keri Clark from Chesham Park Community College, James Jeken from Dr. Challoner's Grammar School, Dean Lobley from Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School, Daniela Iannelli and Simran O'Jalae, both from John Colet Humanities College, and Mary Hunt from Aylesbury High School.
Judging was chefs Matthew White and Damian Blake, who praised all six for their technical ability, preparation and cooking skills.
The judges' final decision was to place Keri Clark third, Simran O'Jalae second, and Mary Hunt first. Mary's dishes were Roast Sweet and Salty Duck, and Baked Ice Cream with Black Forest fruits. Mary will now go on to the District Final at Aylesbury College on February 28.
The winner of this next round will proceed to a Regional Final, with the National Final, which is being sponsored by Filippio Berio, being held in May at North Herts College, Hitchin.
The National Finalist will be awarded several prizes, including a trip to Tuscany and the opportunity to visit Jamie Oliver's 15 Restaurant.
Pat Armstrong, youth officer for Amersham Rotary Club, organised the event.
She said: " It was absolutely fantastic, we were so impressed with the organisation of the youngsters. They were so unflappable.
"This competition gives them self confidence and is a valuable learning experience as well as a lot of fun.
