Great Missenden pupils get creative
Creativity is in vogue at Great Missenden Church of England Combined School as their children are encouraged to think laterally.
A host of curriculum-enhancing projects leads to fun-filled Wednesdays at the Church Street School.
The creative learning afternoons were instigated by deputy head Claire Addis and involve all 375 pupils on the roll, aged from five to 11.
According to Mrs Addis: "This is a chance for our pupils to test things out, to learn new skills, it is about making school life fun filled."
Mrs Addis added that, crucially, the creative learning initiative chimes in with current Government thinking, pioneered in the upcoming Rose Report, which highlights the need for lateral thinking and the all encompassing need for new skills.
One of the most popular activities is the termly creation of a school newspaper - School Scoops - which is produced on paper and on the web under the aegis of joint editors Claire McMahon and Ed Tang, with a staff of 20 pupils.
For linguists there is a change to learn the rudiments of the Spanish language and potential bell ringers can glean something of the noble art at the adjacent parish church of St Peter and St Paul.
Over at The Misbourne School, pupils from Great Missenden can learn about the creation of mosaics taking place over at Misbourne Drive.
There is another group doing cookery, a pirate craft class, and a host of pupils learning all about dances from the 1960s.
