Great Missenden Memorial Hall to get refurb
Plans are afoot to create a new look state-of-the-art Memorial Hall in Great Missenden.
The project, which will kick off in earnest in the New Year, is being driven by the parish council which is setting money aside for the grand scheme.
The idea is being championed, in particular, by parish council chairman Mike Lee who has long coveted the opportunity to breathe fresh life into the Memorial Hall.
The building, created in the early 1970s, is essentially deficient for a modern society, argues Mr Lee, who is fired by the vision of establishing a top notch concert venue in the village.
The timing is propitious in that it coincides with the establishment of the Great Missenden Village Society, inspired by businessman Dennis Keeling, which has classical music - very much - at the heart of its longterm agenda.
Parish council clerk Jane Duffy said a seven-strong working group had been established and its first meeting would be held in January to firm up objectives.
These conclusions would be placed before a public open meeting in Great Missenden during February, Mrs Duffy has pledged.
Mr Lee said: "I have had this idea for some time. The Memorial Hall has long been a disappointment to me. It is acoustically deficient.
"There is an enormous stage which takes up 25 per cent of the floor area - I would envisage perhaps ripping that out and redesigning the interior."
Mr Lee added: "The building, in my view, was designed by an architect who was tone deaf. There is the will in the village to do something about this and it is a perfectly realisable aspiration. It can be achieved."
Funding, said Mr Lee, would come from parish council sources, from grant making trusts, and possibly a village philanthropist, who has been canvased for a substantial donation.
"There has been an encouraging reaction so far and I believe we will push on and get this scheme off the ground next year, " said Mr Lee.
