Pedestrian to campaign against "dangerous crossing"

Posted by Greg Burns on Nov 18, 08 04:14 PM in Local Authority

Prest-James-Boyle.jpgRoads campaigner James Boyle has taken up the verbal cudgel to argue the case against what he claims is a dangerous pedestrian crossing in the High Street, Prestwood.
The crossing, which was built six months ago, is a cause for concern, he says, because people park on the zigzag markings and even on the crossing itself.

The crossing, located adjacent to the Co-operative Supermarket, formerly Rusts, is a particularly busy vantage point, Mr Boyle claims.
Mr Boyle, 85, of Flint Way, has been ultra-active on the road safety front, arguing for a number of years that more needs to be done to help make the area around Chequers Parade safer for pedestrians.
Now he wants something done before there is a fatality outside the Co-op. Mr Boyle is a chartered mechical engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
He said: "Communal anxiety has reached a stage whereby Great Missenden Parish Council has woken up belatedly to the situation.
"The solution is obvious and rather than wait for the inevitable accidents to happen at the new hazardous crossing it should be scrapped forthwith as a futile expensive mistake.
"Those responsible should be reminded of the copious evidence provided over the years to justify the case for a pelican crossing adjacent to the Chequers Lane/High Street junction."
Jane Duffy, clerk to Great Missenden Parish Council, said the crossing had provoked angry discussion at monthly council meetings.
She said: "Illegal parking is a problem at the site of this new crossing. Cars regularly park not just on the zigzag markings and on the pavement but actually on the crossing itself."
Mrs Duffy said that the parish had been in touch with Buckinghamshire County Council's highways department about the crossing.
Ken Moloughney, the county's traffic supremo, has pledged to investigate the feasibility of providing, if suitable, an alternative pelican crossing.
Anyone with concerns should write to Mrs Duffy at the parish council office, off The Link Road, Great Missenden, HP16 9AG.
The supermarket has provided an incident logbook which is located just inside the store. People are invited to lodge their comments.

Something needs to be done about people parking on the double yellow lines outside the Co-op, but the police just ignore it. It is so dangerous. People are lazy as there is a car park next to the shop. Until a few people are hit with parking fines they will continue to park in this selfish way.
