Christmas to be launched at special evening of fun
Villagers in Great Missenden will celebrate Christmas on Saturday (Nov 29) with a Victorian themed evening which will involve traders and residents. The evening commences at 5pm until late.
It is a number of years since the village formally closed off the High Street to welcome visitors for a Dickensian-type evening, something which lends itself particularly well to a picturesque village with a narrow High Street.
The festive lights will be switched on at 7pm sharp adjacent to the library in the High Street, by a young person chosen specifically for the honour.
The driving force behind this year's event is the newly-formed Great Missenden Community Group, which has acquired registered charitable status.
The aim is to raise money to enable senior citizens to avail themselves of festive hospitality at one of three cafes in the village: Cafe Twit at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, Cafe Toria, also in the HIgh Street, and The Village Cafe, another busy social hub.
The Community Group is chaired, in the interim, by parish councillor Karen Pither, with Marilyn Humphreys as secretary and Victoria Pike as treasurer.
They are planning a busy 2009 with a number of interesting events in the pipeline: an Easter Parade, and mid summer party on Buryfield, in the melting pot.
Mrs Humphreys said the community group were aiming at: "Celebrating community and also raising money for the community."
There will be a best dressed window competition, Santa's grotto, children's raffle, and the evening will conclude with a disco at The Black Horse pub, starting at 8pm.
Traders along Station Approach will be involved, too, with mulled wine and other delights being dispensed at Threshers and Samways providing a lucky dip.
There will also be fairground rides for the kids and the High Street will have diverse stalls offering a plethora of goodies.
Most of the shops will be open to spread the joys of the upcoming festive season, so the message, surely, is be sure to arrive early!
