Great Missenden evening - Womens' Institute
The September meeting was opened with members being welcomed back after the summer break. The evening commenced with the speaker, Christine Bloxham, taking us through slides into her world of Dolls House History.
Members were surprised to hear that dolls houses were originally intended for adults long before they became toys for children.
Today, however, it has turned full circle and has once more become a fascinating world in miniature for adults. Mrs Bloxham's slides took us from 16th Century Europe right through to the Victorian age with pictures of the doll's house at Windsor Castle. Christine also brought some examples of her own work with her. Beautifully crafted boxes filled with miniature delights. The subject was of special interest to several members who have themselves created their own dolls' houses.
After refreshments the monthly business was started.
Minutes from the July meeting were read and the two very successful events discussed. Firstly the annual summer barbecue was a great success and members were thanked for all their hard work which made it an enjoyable event. We were blessed with good weather, a rare treat during the summer. Our summer event was a visit to the Henley Rowing Museum. This was also considered very successful, and members enjoyed a trip on the River Thames, together with a tour of the museum which displayed memorabilia attached to river and the rowing events that have taken place over the years. Members also enjoyed their lunch at the museum restaurant.
Great Missenden Library window has been decorated for two weeks as part of the WI promotion fortnight. This is a display of events and activities carried out by members throughout the year. Future events will include coffee mornings, craft afternoons and walks through the Chiltern countryside.
Our next meeting will take place at the Great Missenden Memorial Hall on October 16 and our speaker will be John Tyler talking about The Ridgeway.

Just a quick letter of thanks to Valerie Corteen and all the ladies of the WI. I've been serving in Afghan and my Troop received a letter and a few parcels from your WI. It is a kind and warm letter, thank you all for your support and to those who donated gifts, especially during a recession where making ends meet is hard for everyone. The squadron is now back in Germany and eating its way back to health, as you do!
Take care ladies
