Buckinghamshire Stories of the Supernatural
By David Kidd-Hewitt

Some of us might say we don't believe in ghosts, but few of us are rash enough to say categorically that they do not exist. In his new book Buckinghamshire Stories of the Supernatural brought out to coincide with Hallowe'en, Great Missenden author David Kidd-Hewitt does not try to persuade either way. However, the sheer number of apparitions, phantoms, ghosts and spectres which he describes will cause even hardened sceptics to pause.

Many of the stories are first hand accounts and range in time and place throughout Buckinghamshire. There is the terrifying experience of two young men who were pursued through the dark, empty corridors of a derelict hospital at Taplow by a malevolent presence known as 'The flincher', the family in Marlow who were unnerved by a ghost who talked to them, and their dog, in their kitchen; the couple in Wooburn Green who were woken at night by the sound of ominous footsteps climbing the stairs towards their bedroom; and the frightening and disturbing events experienced by a young boy who followed the spectral form of the Green Lady through the halls of Woodrow High House.
Other accounts of paranormal experiences include sightings of the ghostly bride, Sukie, who walks the dark tunnels of the notorious Hell-Fire Caves at West Wycombe seeking revenge for her untimely death; a taxi driver who collected the shade of a young woman from a nightclub in Denbigh; and the chilling story of William Edden who met a violent, murderous death in 1828 and now reappears upon occasion to those passing the scene of his death near Haddenham.
Not all of David Kidd-Hewitt's tales are frightening! There is a phantom in the Elephant and Castle pub in Old Amersham who pinches the bottoms of unsuspecting staff; a group of unseen revellers at Halton House who disturb guests at night with a noisy game of Billiards; and a young female ghost who occasionally woke Cilla Black from sleep at her home in Denham.
These stories and more are recounted in this absorbing volume. And whether you believe in ghosts or not David Kidd-Hewitt's book makes chilling and compulsive reading.
"It is a shock when the supernatural touches your life", says author David Kidd-Hewitt. "Even if you are not quite sure of exactly what you have experienced you know it was truly out of the ordinary".
Buckinghamshire Stories of the Supernatural is published by Countryside books at £8.99 and is available from all local booksellers or direct from the publishers at www.countrysidebooks.co.uk
