Eight-year-old wows literary judges
A young scribe from Great Missenden has won a poetry competition.
Morgan Jones, 8, who attends Great Missenden Church of England Combined School has won the Young Bard 2008 competition run by Chiltern Railways and the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
Chiltern worked with the RSC to promote literacy and creativity amongst their young passengers.
The competition invited children aged between seven and 12 to write a poem about holiday and travel and was judged by Lyn Darnley, head of text, voice and artist development at the RSC.
Lyn said: "Morgan's poem captures the fun of a summer holiday. I like the use of rhyme, rhythm and repetition in the poem - it certainly creates the idea of travelling on a train!"
Morgan will now be invited on a tour of the RSC and will be presented with a Complete Works of Shakespeare signed by Lyn Darnley.
Michael Scanlan, PR and communications manager at Chiltern said Morgan found out about the competition at school and decided to enter.
He said: "He was absolutely delighted to win and he's really looking forward to going up to Stratford upon Avon to look around the theatre with the RSC.
"He is also hoping to meet Dr Who star David Tennant who is currently performing there in the title role of Hamlet, and I think his mum is just as delighted that she will be able to meet David."
Morgan's Poem:
Holiday, Holiday
Morgan Jones
Holiday, holiday,
We go we go on a train,
Holiday, holiday,
It's lucky it didn't rain.
Holiday, holiday
It's so, so fun
Holiday, holiday
Buy me a bun.
Holiday, holiday
We go to the zoo
Holiday, holiday
The cows go moo
Holiday, holiday
We collect some conkers
Holiday, holiday
My brother goes bonkers
Holiday, holiday
We go to the park,
Holiday, holiday,
We hear a dog bark.
Holiday, holiday,
It's time to end,
Holiday, holiday,
Go back to my friends.
